Xavier Dodds

If someone would have told me 5 years ago that i was going to become a professional yachtsman, I would have laughed and said no way. Before I joined as a trainee in 2013 I had only done dingy sailing on a lake and didn’t even know a career in sailing was possible.
When I joined I was 18 years old, leaving home for the first time and nervous about to embark on an unknowingly life changing voyage.
After 10 months of racing in the Med & Caribbean including two Atlantic crossings I had 11,500 nautical miles under my belt.
Andy Middleton and Christian Reynolds then helped me gain my Yachtmaster Offshore and kick start my professional yachting career.
After my Traineeship both Andy continued to support me in finding work and helped me get my foot firmly in the industry.
I eventually found my first full time job on-board a Swan 112 where I started as a deckhand and soon climbed my way up to first mate.
5 years on I have logged over 40,000 nautical miles and I am now working on-board a 48m modern classic sailing yacht as bosun working towards my officer of the watch ticket with long term goals set on captaining a 50m super yacht

If you are considering a traineeship with GYT I’d say don’t hesitate, just do it!
Whether it be just for the experience, a gap year or a potential career move… it was a life changing experience and probably one of the best years I’ve ever had. THANK YOU !!!
