A DIFFERENT CHOICE
What is the difference between an RYA Yachtmaster Course and the Race Skipper Traineeship?
There are many RYA schools offering RYA qualifications up to Yachtmaster level. These FastTrack courses can last up to seventeen weeks and cost in the region of up to £11,000
They are intensive learning courses based on learning theory and practising on the water drills. They provide a route to gaining qualifications, but generally don’t give the all-important experience that employers are looking for. None of them provide any grounding in how to work as a race skipper or race crew.
The alternative – Yacht Skipper Traineeship
The GYR Race Skipper Traineeship is different. In addition to sailing thousands of miles from the UK to the Med and across the Atlantic, and as well as gaining superb sailing skills from our team of RYA instructors you will take part in many of the best yacht racing events around the world.
You will gain experience operating a race charter vessel, learn MCA coding requirements, ISAF regulations, yacht preparation for racing, splicing and rope work, engine checks, sail care and repair and will get an insider look at the race yacht charter industry. You will learn about the paperwork needed for race entry, how to read sailing instructions and the racing rules.
Working with customers
You will learn how to coach and teach yacht racing clients effectively and safely. You will be taught techniques to create a performing team from amateur crew as well as learning how to provide excellent hospitality to corporate and individual customers.
Genuine and useful experience
You will sail thousands of miles and take part in some fabulous regattas and races as active crew. As a professional crew member you will complete an impressive amount of regatta and offshore racing as well as delivery passages and a transatlantic.
A CV that will stand out
By the end of your traineeship you will be confident to step into any area of the yachting industry that you choose and have a CV to really be proud of which will shine above most other job applicants. You will have a year’s worth of genuine work experience, impressive miles and racing logged and a level of knowledge and skill that can only be gained by this type of hands on experience.
