Traineeship Programme

Thank you Global Yacht Racing for an awesome few months!

The traineeship programme has been a great experience and a lot of fun ⛵

Jenn joined Global after Les Voiles de St Tropez regatta to sail over to Malta for the Rolex Middle Sea Race. She then stayed with us to complete a number of mile building passages and also took her RYA YM Ocean theory course with us. She took part in the RORC Transatlantic and RORC Caribbean 600 races aboard ‘EH01’. To wrap up her tailored traineeship programme she stayed with us, to join our race teams for a number of inshore Caribbean regattas. She will take her YM exam back in the UK in May. After which she is skippering in the 50th edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race before re-joning GYR to work with us later this year!

Jenn Ramsdale – Tailored Traineeship Programme

Greg joined Global Yacht Racing aged just eighteen. He used to help out on a milk round before school, and the money he saved went towards a day skipper course and delivery trips. “I read a few sailing books growing up, which fueled a sort of escapism, and ‘running away to sea’ became a standing joke with my parents”. “I’m grateful to my parents who are so supportive, because opportunities like this don’t come up often. They’ve been remarkably good natured about the whole thing because, as they keep telling me, it’s cheaper than university!”

Greg Wiiliams – January to June Traineeship Programme

If you are considering a traineeship with PYR I’d say don’t hesitate, just do it!
Whether it be just for the experience, a gap year or a potential career move… it was a life changing experience and probably one of the best years I’ve ever had. THANK YOU Performance Yacht racing!!!

Xavier C Dodds – Trainee 2013-14

Coming from the Isles of Scilly I had quite a good sailing background. I was blown away by the experience with PYR.

Not just the miles and training but the chance to race in so many great regattas. Since passing my YM I’ve had a sweet time, I spent many months delivering yachts and freelance skippering in the US and Europe.

For the last four months I’ve been working for a sailing charity called ‘Turn To Starboard’ running from Falmouth.

Tristan Dorrien-Smith – Traineeship 2017

I took the opportunity to do the trip from Cowes to Gibraltar with Performance Yacht Training in September this year and was rewarded by the most spectacular trip.
Andy’s ability to provide expert tips and suggestions to enhance the sailing whilst keeping a great level of humour, fun and laughs made this trip fly past.  Being my first trip on a race yacht was a challenge which Andy helped everybody work through and changing headsails soon became a fast and fluid routine – after a few soakings!

The most memorable part of this trip had to be surfing down waves at 10 knots in beautiful sunshine with the stereo blasting out Who Let The Dogs Out and having the very fun race skipper trainee Kate as a watch mate. Fantastic

Patrick Good – Adventure sailing Cowes Gibraltar 2013/2015

Before my traineeship, my only real sailing experience was on Tall Ships and dinghy’s, the programme and the skills I learnt during my time there set me up for working on yachts. Not only that, but on my CV, the prestigious races we competed in and all the places that we sailed to that I would never have been able to reach by myself beforehand. Thank you
Performance Yacht Training! If you are reading this and thinking about doing the Traineeship – go for it!

Rachel Stephenson – Traineeship 2015

14th December 2013, the day after our arrival in St Lucia and first time to reflect on anawesome adventure!
Approaching the island on EH01 on Friday morning was a sensation to remember forever; a strong breeze on the beam as we sailed fast through our waypoint, spectacular views of St
Lucia, Gareth’s music blasting from the cockpit speakers and everyone fired up for the finish after an adventurous 19 days at sea. We rounded up and beat in to the line in spectacular style, the crew reacting quickly to Andy’s orders (for once!)……the rest involves many many bottles of beer…..MAINLY Piton.

Loved sailing with you Andy and all the way from Gib with you Gareth. You people are deadly serious when it matters and mad as hatters when it doesn’t…that for me is a perfect sailing adventure.
